Arthramid®Vet - Polyacrylamid-Gel als innovative Gelenkstherapie
A completely new type of therapy for arthritic and painful joints. Polyacrylamides are integrated into the joint capsule and act as a joint regulator alongside a non-degradable buffer. Even though the mechanisms of action are not yet fully understood, studies have shown very positive results in horses and dogs with chronic joint diseases (osteoarthritis). Further extensive studies are currently being conducted together with the pharmaceutical manufacturer. Arthramid®Vet is only used in specialised clinics and practices in Germany.
As veterinarians, we know from experience that lameness and osteoarthritis are a particularly frequent reason for presentation in veterinary practice. Osteoarthritis therefore poses the question for many owners as to what treatment options are available for the animal so that it can continue to participate in sporting activities, competitions or everyday life without pain or symptoms. Even though most animals are older, they can be treated at any age. New studies show that a preventive effect can also be achieved for further wear and tear in the joints.
As a 2.5% polyacrylamide hydrogel, Arthramid®Vet offers an effective, simple and also long-lasting treatment option for lameness. The hydrogel consists of 97.5 % sterile water and 2.5 % polyacrylamide. The composition is similar to that of organic hyaluronic acid, but remains in the joint for longer and is not degradable for several years on average, as has been shown in human medical studies. Arthramid®Vet is elastic and viscous and is therefore very suitable for joint treatments. The hydrogel is injected into the joint, where it is fully integrated into the joint capsule.
The ingrowth of new tissue improves the elasticity of the capsule and significantly reduces the internal joint pressure. Recent studies show that pain receptors are blocked, which also has a positive effect on joint mobility. Joint function is normalised again and the joint becomes pain-free.
90% of animals only require a single joint injection, which lasts for several years after an integration period of approx. 4-6 weeks. In individual cases it may be necessary to repeat the injection, but long-term results show good efficacy over 2-3 years.
